A Little Late to The Agent Appreciation Day Party

I just found out it’s unofficially Official Agent Appreciation Day. Thanks to all of you who spend your days working on the behalf of authors.

And as for my agent, Michelle Humphrey, here are some reasons I’m thankful to be working with her:

1. Michelle pulled my query from the slush and within two weeks called to offer representation. She started the conversation with lovely, lovely things to say about my writing, things I jotted down madly as I listened, things I’d never heard someone working in the publishing industry say about my work, like “Loved story. Loved character. Great inner drama. Lots here gorgeous. Read in one sitting. What really strikes is the secondary characters are full of life. Beautiful poetic lines.” To hear this, to learn someone gets what you’re attempting AND thinks it’s good, that’s golden.

2. Michelle has made the effort to get her children’s authors (all YA, except good ol’ me) connected with one another. It’s wonderful, as the new kid, to have others I can interact with and learn from. She calls us the Awesome Authors and promises us official badges someday…right Michelle? πŸ˜‰

3. Michelle has a great attitude about rejection, that it’s part of the process and will eventually lead to good things. When I read her post at The Guide to Literary Agents blog (my first introduction to her and the reason I queried), she’d said to laugh at rejection and make rejection pie. Her upbeat personality is just what I need in the midst of the submission process.

So thanks, Michelle, for believing in me. Happy Agent Appreciation Day!

I’m the Agent I Appreciate until I get one willing to take me on as client and when I do get the agent I’ll be sure to appreciate him/her on this day.
    You have a great weekend.

Michelle seems like such a sweetheart. (And she’s smart too! All she said about May B. seems right on to me! )

What a great agent! Her comments about your work, as LiLa would say, total writer porn. Exactly the words we all want to hear. Congratulations on finding someone who gets you!

I love “make rejection pie.” But let’s hope I don’t have to. πŸ™‚
