The arts are not a way to make a living. They are a very human way of making life more bearable. Practicing an art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow, for heaven’s sake. Sing in the shower. Dance to the radio. Tell stories. Write a poem to a friend, even a lousy poem. Do it as well as you possibly can. You will get an enormous reward. You will have created something.
— Kurt Vonnegut
I never heard that Vonnegut quote before. Thank you ! My heart thanks you. I’ve had quite a bit of time on my hands as I recuperate from my second brain aneurysm rupture and it makes my soul sing to realize just how much I have written, even if it’s not published.
Oh Joanne, I’m so sorry to hear this. Please know I’m thinking of you.
Thanks for sharing such an inspiring quote. Too many times we hold back from being creative because we are afraid it won’t be “good enough” to be held up against the work of others. But every time we take a step to be creative in any way we are achieving something brilliant and contributing to our personal growth. Of course, it’s even better if we can share it with others and brighten their day and inspire them too!
Yes! Creativity makes life fuller, whether what we create is “good” or not.
