Valerie asked, “Are you working on anything new right now? Will your next book be in verse too? So far, what’s been your favorite book that you’ve read this year?”
It’s rather horrifying to admit this, but I haven’t started any new piece of writing for a whole year. (There was that terrible NaNo attempt, but it’s not worth mentioning). Instead, I’ve been consistently revising two mid-grade novels and one picture book when not working on May B.
Nope. No other verse novels. Yet. I plan to re-start my research on the Gitanos (Spanish Gypsies) this fall. The hope is another verse novel, this one filled with lots of color and movement. Now that I’m back in New Mexico, I plan to sign up for flamenco classes again (I took a summer workshop years ago). What better way to learn about my character could there be?
As far as a favorite book this year, it would have to be THE HELP. Check out my post on this amazing book here.
Jill asked, “Will you be teaching again? It always boggles my mind how women can work, raise children, and write, all at the same time.”
After wrapping up the 2008-2009 school year, I don’t think I’ll ever teach full-time again. I can teach, parent, and write, but I don’t feel like I give my best when I do. Still, I miss those long-term relationships with kids. I’m hoping to continue after-school book clubs or the like. I would definitely be open to some sort of part-time position, summer position, school library talks, etc.
And Jill, I want you to know I’ve already had a green chile cheeseburger from Blake’s.
TerryLynn asked, “Will you be holding a launch party for May B.?”
I haven’t really thought that far ahead, but I do know that I’m going back to Louisiana September or October 2011 for an author visit at my old school (how amazing will that be?) and a book signing at the wonderful Bent Pages bookstore.
As for the puppy, she comes this afternoon. I promise to post pictures soon.
Thanks to my lovely friend, Jamie Martin, for running my Dads and Reading post at Steady Mom.
I’m loving all these honest answers! Maybe nothing new for a year, but I’m sure your brain has been percolating another amazing story.
Thanks, Terry. I needed that.
Was it delicious? You have to tell me because I haven’t had a green chile cheeseburger in years, ever since my wheat allergy snatched such delights from me.:)
It was AMAZING. The green chile was extra good. Can’t wait for September to smell the roasting chile…
I understand exactly how you feel when you say:

I left teaching for the same reason, but I found I missed it so much that I went back 4 years later. This time, with my children older, teaching was a joy and inspiration to me.
Looking forward to seeing pictures of the puppy.
Mary
The Help IS an amazing book. And it was so great to learn more about you! Here’s to life settling down so you can research and write that Gitano book. :o)
Have a great week, Caroline!
I love green chili burgers.
Keep us posted on the bent pages booksigning. I’ll definitely try to be there.
