Author Appreciation Week: The Early Years

In honor of Author Appreciation Week, I want to share with you authors who made a difference in my life. Today I’ll focus on authors I read in childhood (the challenge being I won’t mention authors/books I’ve discussed here before). Tomorrow I’ll focus on authors I discovered later on.

Thank you, Jean Little, for your beautiful story about friendship and courage.
Mine for Keeps
Robert C. O’Brien, your world of rats and mice made me race back from recess for reading time (thanks, Mrs. Klein, for reading to us daily).
Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh
Mary Stolz, thank you for helping me see the world through others’ eyes.
THE BULLY OF BARKHAM STREET    A Dog on Barkham Street
Dr. P. L. Travers, thank you for creating a series I adored.
Mary Poppins     Mary Poppins Opens the Door     Mary Poppins Comes Back    Mary Poppins in the Park
Margaret Sidney, thank you for stories where love wins out in the end.
Classic Starts: Five Little Peppers and How They Grew (Classic Starts Series)
Frank and Ernestine Gilbreth, I loved every minute I spent with your family.
CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN     Belles on Their Toes

Which authors did you enjoy as a child?

Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh was one of my all time favorite books as a young child.

When my daughter started kindergarten I read it to her. She is now in high school, an avid reader, and still names that as her favorite book of all time.

    Excellent.

I also loved Charlotte’s Web (natch) and a Wrinkle in Time. And, Judy Blume books.

Lola, I think I’m the only person in the world not to connect with A WRINKLE IN TIME.

The most surprising thing about your list is that I haven’t read a single one! Horrible I know. I better put a few of them on my reading list for the year.

I loved Roald Dahl. I liked princess stories and fiction that took place during WWII, but I can’t think of any other specific authors I liked in grade school. That’s bad, huh? I don’t think I really started to enjoy reading until junior high.

Those are some great books! Some of mine were Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys, Encyclopedia Brown, Anne of Green Gables & Little Women. 🙂

I read the Boxcar Children by Gertrude Chandler Warner over and over, as well as Wait ‘Til Helen Comes by Mary Downing Hahn. I was so enamored with the idea of a graveyard for a backyard! Beverly Cleary was always a favorite.

What a fun post! We had a ton of Golden Books that I would read when I was young. I also buried my nose in Nancy Drew, Encyclopedia Brown and Pippi Longstocking. I would even take home discarded readers from our classroom and read them over and over again.

Excellent choices. I think I would have to go with Judy Blume. I read every Ramona book available. 🙂

Omg! The Rats of Nimh! I’d totally forgotten about that book. Thanks for the nostalgia.
