Book Clubs for Kids: Win a May B. Book Club Kit!

As happy as I am to be writing full time, I miss spending regular time with students. I hope as my book makes it into the world I’ll have opportunities to talk with kids during school visits, library talks, and book club discussions.

Come January

If you are a part of a children’s book club (or know anyone who might be interested), I’d love to work with your group. If you’re local (somewhere in New Mexico), I’ll make every effort to meet with your readers in person. If you’re anywhere else, I’d be happy to Skype with you during your meeting. All I ask is that your kids have read my book beforehand.

If you’re a teacher, go to my Skype an Author page to learn more about classroom or book club discussions. As part of Kate Messner’s Author Skype Tour, I’m also willing to give a few copies of my book away for those interested in a virtual author chat. Stop by to learn more!

And… I am donating to one lucky school or reading circle a May B. Book Club Kit. The kit would include the following:

  • 10 copies of May B.
  • discussion questions
  • background on the storyline and setting
  • copies of a literature-based assignment I’ve created called Where in the World Are We Reading (used successfully during my years teaching)
  • ideas for social studies and poetry tie-ins (if applicable)
  • bookmarks
  • CD with book trailer
  • interactive Skype visit

All groups to enter will receive bookmarks for their readers.

If you or someone you know might be interested in entering to win (grades four through eighth qualify), please contact me at carolineATcarolinestarrroseDOTcom. Tell me about your readers and why you’d like to win. That’s it!

This contest is open internationally and will close November 1, 2011.

Please spread the word!

What a wonderful opportunity. I’ll tell my teacher friends about this!

How cool is this? I’ve got a group of third graders (all advanced readers) who would love to do this, but it sounds like we’re not eligible. I’ll still be on the lookout for your book. I just blogged about our kids book club yesterday.

Kristine, you are now officially eligible! The age range is the typical MG 8-12, and while (personally) think 10 is a better starting age for the storyline, I’m NEVER going to withhold a book from a child.

    You are welcome to enter.

I’ve just gotten a lovely entry from a family in Indonesia and am now opening the contest internationally!

This is SUCH a great idea, Caroline, and your book is one I cannot WAIT to read and celebrate on my own blog. I am trying to think of a best use for your talents and discussion (since my own child, sadly, has grown up and nearly away). Back soon, when I have a great notion. I just wish I still was working with children this age!

Natalie, you could read with your daughter and her friends!

Lynn, thank you for spreading the word.

Beth, thank you a thousand times over. My own boys are in the mid-grade range, and in a few weeks we’re going to have a May B. family read aloud.

Initially, my fifth-grader decided my book would be dull because it’s not funny (and books kids like are funny, he says), though now that we’ve read Hatchet together, he’s got a different idea about survival stories.

I am a homeschooling mom of two girls and would love to win this! We are new to our area, but am hoping to start a girls’ book club this fall or maybe spring (once we meet a few more people). Your book sounds like a great one to start with and I’ll be sure to let my old book club know about it too!!! 🙂

We would love to win this! I am currently homeschooling 4th, 1st, and pre-k. I have a one year old and a baby on the way. Not to mention our large military homeschool group. This is awesome! 🙂
