I was up at school yesterday, talking with the librarian about ordering books for the Louisiana Young Readers’ Choice Award. My seventh graders were in the library. (Technically, they’re no longer mine, but like it or not, they’re stuck with being called mine forever!).
One of my boys, a non-reader who really connected with Peak last year, came up to me without any prompting. “Mrs. Rose, I’m reading a lot this year. I’ve read My Side of the Mountain and Hatchet.”
I told him he has to read the entire Brian series and have just found an extra copy of Brian’s Hunt (thank you, Scholastic book orders) that I’ll take to him when I’m up at school for book club today.
I love when kids connect with books. I love playing book matchmaker. Little moments like this are so key. I feel I’ve gotten to witness something magical in the making.
YOU are part of making the magic happen!
Jamie
Thanks, Jamie. I was really happy to see my enthusiastic sixth and seventh graders this afternoon. Twelve of them. They’re the ones who have participated in book club before, so to see them back is especially good.
Gary Paulsen – good choice for non-readers! His book Woodsong is also delightful.
