Fast Five: On the Nightstand

I’ve loved all the middle grade and young adult novels I’ve read these last few months, but I have to be honest: never have I spent so much time away from adult literature. I’m really missing grown-up books. Here are some I hope to get to soon.

Geraldine Brooks — The People of the Book
People of the Book: A Novel
I’ve been invited to join a local book club (hooray!). This will be my first read with this group.

The Tender Bar — J. R. Moehringer
The Tender Bar: A Memoir
I found this at my parents’ house and claimed it (My mom is always generous with a good book).

The Known World — Edward P. Jones
The Known World
Before I left Louisiana, I made sure to use my used book store credits at Bent Pages, my favorite Houma store. This is a book I picked up there.

Nefertiti: A Novel — Michelle Moran
Nefertiti: A Novel
Found this one at Bent Pages, too.

Peony in Love — Lisa See
Peony in Love: A Novel
I’ve had this book for over a year (lucky winner of a blog giveaway) and must get to it.

What adult titles are you looking forward to?

I listened to People of the Book on audio recently and just loved it. I thought it was such an intriguing story. Enjoy!

I’m glad I’m not the only one whose books wait on my nightstand forever!

My sister gave me a Kate Morton book that I want to read soon: The Forgotten Garden.

Do you still want to go see Jane Eyre, or did you already go? (I won’t blame you if you couldn’t resist.)

I’m buried ten feet under in adult books! ๐Ÿ™‚

Right now I’m reading Cutting for Stone, but I have Water for Elephants, Mennonite in a Little Black Dress, and The Devil in the White City that I want to read before next semester starts! So many books, so little time! ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m reading Water for Elephants. But I can’t wait to get A Game of Thrones.

Heidi, I want to read everything on your list! Looks like you and bfav could have a discussion.

Anna, so glad to hear you liked it. I love books on CD but wasn’t sure I had enough driving to do between now and the book club (I do my listening in the car). I’ve got another Geraldine Brooks book on my shelf that I haven’t gotten to yet — THE YEAR OF MIRACLES, I believe. Another hand-me-down from my mother.

Rosslyn, I haven’t been yet. Are you free Wednesday?

I have two out of your selection on my TBR pile (The Known World and Peony in Love). Well, they’re actually lost in the depths of my bookshelves somewhere, but I did buy them from a book sale at the library with the hope of reading them someday. I read The Tender Bar a while ago & loved it!

To answer your question…I have Kate Morton’s Forgotten Garden on my nightstand (saw someone else listed that too), as well as Words, by Ginny Yttrup. I’m in love with the cover of that one, btw.

Thanks for visiting my blog the other day. ๐Ÿ™‚

I have a bunch but here are a few: Swamplandia, West of Here, Ape House, The Imperfectionists, Fall of Giants, Home. I would love an opinion on where to start if anyone has one.

Hi Joan! Hope all is well with you and your family. I haven’t read any of your books, but have heard good things about several. I’m biased toward the amazingness that is Marilynne Robinson and would have to start with Home. Then maybe the gator book. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I’m impressed you read any adult novels. I never have time. There’s too many YA & middle grade I want to read.

I love my book club–it forces me to read something adult every so often.

I’ve got ROOM sitting by my bed right now, and I’m reading THE NINETEEN WIFE.

I recently bought Of Bees and Mist by Erick Setiawan and The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafรณn. After a huge YA binge, I’m ready for something different!

Sarah, my mom read THE NINETEENTH WIFE for a book club a couple of years ago. I was struck by the similarity between that cover and THE CHOSEN ONE.

Sherrie, I read THE SHADOW OF THE WIND last year and absolutely loved it. Can’t wait to hear what you think.

We are doing great! Evan still asks me every now and again when your book is coming out and I tell him that it won’t be long.

Thanks for the recommendation on Home. I am reading The Tea Room right now which I believe I picked up on a recommendation from you as well.

My best to you and yours! ๐Ÿ™‚

Tell Evan my book is coming in January. I’d love to go to Houma and sign at Bent Pages (plus do an author visit at St. Matt’s).

I wish I’d recommended The Tea Room, but I’ve never heard of it!

Crazy me, I meant The Tea Rose (Jennifer Donnelly)!

Yes, I will give Evan the date and we will look forward to the book signing at BP.

I haven’t heard of many of these titles being thrown around here. Great topic!
I’ve been doing lots of YA and MG reading last few months. Some fantastic stories! Still waiting on my bookshelf is Water for Elephants.
