Help an Author at the Library

What’s an easy, free way to get your hands on a new book and promote your author friends? Ask your local library to consider buying a book!

In the last few months, I’ve asked the children’s department of the Terrebonne Parish Library to order four different books. Not once have I been turned down.

Keep this in mind next time you want to read the latest. And when your friends sell, stop by your local library to request an order.

PJ, I’m keeping my promise. As soon as THE EMERALD TABLET comes, I’ll be on it.

Nice post. Unfortunately for people up here, the libraries rarely take requests, due to budget cuts. I still manage to make some though and they usually give in.

Poor Michigan. That makes me sad.

This is such a great post! Most of the public libraries out here are willing to take requests, but the private ones rarely do.

    Whoo hoo! Thank you, Caroline!

And really, it’s great advice. I recommend books at our elementary library all the time and the librarians actually buy them. It really makes you feel like you are making a difference.

    Thanks again!

This is a great suggestion, Caroline. You’re right – they will usually buy books when people request them. Love it! πŸ™‚

Gee, I feel like smackin’ myself in the head. I’d never thought of that. Great post and bit of knowledge!

What to do when they say, “we can get it for you through inter-library loan”. What’s the best approach to get them to realize to order their own copy?

Elizabeth, Good question. Maybe you can talk up why the book would benefit local readers. You could always ask someone else to request, too!

What a great idea Caroline. I always get frustrated when my library doesn’t have debuts that I want to read. I just go out and buy them. But I should request them first and THEN go out and buy them πŸ™‚

Never thought of requesting them–that’s a clever idea.

Great idea! I ask the local bookstores…but now we are down to one bookstore. Can you imagine we are the largest community in about an hours drive, and we only have one bookstore!

    Sharon, how frustrating!

Another great reason to talk to a librarian about a title: if it becomes popular, they will purchase copies for other branches.
