The beautiful thing about books

I don’t believe that there is a topic too heavy for middle grade. I think the beautiful thing about books is that we need all of them. Not every child should read my books. Children should choose their own books. One of the really great things about reading broadly and widely is that you start to develop an ability to see when something isn’t right for you and to set it down. I feel like that’s an important part of literacy and education: knowing what will be helpful to you and what won’t be. The real dangers are when we don’t empower children to make their own choices or when we don’t have books for the kids who need them. What if there is a reader who needs this book and it’s not there?

You are so right. Evan as an adult I will not read any book I do not care for, despite the book being a best seller. I choose the type of book I know I will enjoy. Thank You for this post.

Wonderful quote, Caroline. Thanks! I especially love this part: “Children should choose their own books.” So true! Also Laurel’s last line: “What if there is a reader who needs this book and it’s not there? ” This is why organizations like First Book are so important.
