Why We Read

I’ve traveled the world twice over,
Met the famous; saints and sinners,
Poets and artists, kings and queens,
Old stars and hopeful beginners,
I’ve been where no one’s been before,
Learned secrets from writers and cooks
All with one library ticket
To the wonderful world of books.

I want my children to memorize this one. Why don’t they make them memorize poems in school anymore??

I used to make my students memorize poems. We’d end our poetry unit with a “Coffee House.” I’d stick up a faux brick wall and curtains, hang posters the kids had made over the years, turn off the lights, invite parents, buy treats, and yes, serve coffee to eleven-year-olds.

They’d recite their poem, and we’d snap our appreciation. I would memorize a new one each year, too.

It was one of my favorite days all school year.

Awesome quote! I agree this should be one the schools instill in our children.

Oh, this just makes me so happy. There is NOTHING better than reading a good book. Well, except maybe writing a good book!

    P.S.
Your agent ROCKS. We got a form rejection from her on the first (doomed) manuscript we queried and even her form R was lovely. She should trademark that thing and sell it to other agents.

Inspiring! And was interesting to read your Wed. post about NaNo. I’ve never done it, but I can imagine I’d have a similar experience!

These words are terrific. And how true – books are windows into other worlds where we can be someone else, do something else, ask different questions, all without consequence. What a wonderful world it is! I’m happy to have found your blog! Thank you for your comment on mine.
